Shrimp Pho
This Shrimp Pho is a delicious and aromatic version of the classic Vietnamese noodle soup dish, perfect for a quick dinner at home. This dish features wild-caught colossal shrimp, rice noodles, and an aromatic broth, blending savory, sweet, and umami flavors in each spoonful. This recipe adds fresh herbs and lime juice to the classic dish, creating a bright and colorful soup dish perfect for a quick dinner at home.
Pho can be intimidating to cook at home, but this recipe makes it easy without compromising flavor. This dish cooks slowly to simmer the aromatics of ginger, garlic, and spices to create a flavorful broth to complement the natural sweetness and firmness of the colossal shrimp. Fresh herbs and vegetables, and a squeeze of lime juice, add freshness to the dish to create a wholesome and balanced meal to satisfy your cravings.
Why This Shrimp Pho Recipe Works
This dish works because of the combination of the natural sweetness of the wild-caught shrimp and the savory, spiced broth, which has a tremendous depth of flavor. Cooking the ginger, onion, and other pho-spice ingredients like star anise, cloves, and cinnamon creates a broth that has the maximum flavor without overpowering the natural taste of the shrimp.
Adding the shrimp at the very end of cooking ensures that it does not become tough and rubbery, which could happen if it's cooked for too long. This timing preserves the natural sweetness of the shrimp, which complements the savory taste of the broth and the natural freshness of the herbs and other vegetables added to the dish.
Individual Ingredients in Shrimp Pho
Colossal Shrimp: Wild-caught and tender, these shrimp provide the main source of protein and sweetness. Added at the end of the cooking time, they retain juiciness and firmness, creating a pleasing ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ texture for the soup.
Rice Noodles: Silky and gluten-free, the rice noodles help to soak up the flavorful broth while remaining light. They form the classic texture component that makes pho so comforting.
Ginger: Fresh ginger adds warmth and a touch of spice to the dish, offsetting the richness of the shrimp and the broth.
Garlic: Garlic adds depth to the main savory component, creating a mild yet fragrant taste.
Onion: Onion adds body and sweetness to the broth, creating a balanced taste component.
Star Anise & Cloves: These traditional pho spices add a touch of licorice and warmth, creating a subtly aromatic backdrop that elevates the broth.
Thai Basil & Cilantro: Fresh herbs add brightness and a fragrant, slightly peppery taste to the soup.
Lime Juice: Adding lime juice gives the soup a touch of brightness and cuts through the richness of the buttered broth, balancing the flavors in each bowl.
Chili or Sriracha (Optional): This adds a touch of heat to the soup for those who like their food spicy and adds depth to the broth without overwhelming the flavor of the shrimp.
Fish Sauce: This adds umami and saltiness to the broth and complements all the other flavors in the soup.
